For context, descriptors were added to the rating scale for each category. As an example, the "end- of-day comfort" category designated 100 as "excellent; cannot be felt," 80 as "very comfortable; just felt oc- casionally," 60 as "comfortable; noticeable but not irri- tating," 40 as "uncomfortable; irritating or annoying," 20 as "very uncomfortable; very irritating or annoying," and 0 as "painful; difficult to wear lenses." All participants had healthy eyes (corneal and conjunctival assessments ≤ Grade 1 and absent corneal infiltrates) and were myopic (-0.25D to -6.00D). Two hundred twenty-six patients with these char- acteristics were enrolled as the contact lens dry eye cohort. The majority of participants were female (69.0%).The average age was 26.8 years; the majority of participants were less than 30 years of age (Table 1). Mean refractive sphere and cylinder powers were -3.33D and -0.22D, respectively. A comparison of ha- bitual lens powers to study lens powers showed that 93.8% of lenses were within +/-0.25D. Patients in the contact lens dry eye cohort wore their habitual lenses an average of 14.3 hours per day. They spent an average of 5.1 hours using a desktop or notebook computer at the office and an average of 2.0 hours at home (Table 2).
