Bausch + Lomb Biotrue ® Multi- Purpose Solution Paves Way for Contact Lens Success By Harue Marsden, OD Professor and associate dean of clinical education Southern California College of Optometry Owner/partner: Granada Hills Optometric Center, Granada Hills, CA Diamond Eye Optometry, Simi Valley, CA I provide eye care for a wide variety of contact lens-wearing patients. Most of my direct patient care occurs at a teaching clinic located in the heart of a bustling college community in Orange County (next to LA). Our industry part- ners and clinical instructors continually stress to students that the Holy Grail of contact lens wear is to prevent dropout. We explain that contact lens success comes from fi nding the right lens mate- rial and the right lens care system that will best meet each patient's vision and lifestyle needs. We want this message to stick with students as they develop into professional eye care practitioners. Many of my contact lens-wearing patients, particularly those from neigh- boring colleges and communities, prefer to simplify their lens care with a multi- purpose contact lens solution. I frequently recommend Bausch + Lomb Biotrue® multi-purpose solution for patients who are experiencing dryness or deposits on their lenses. In eye care, changes to the care system o en make lens-wearing easier and more comfortable. Bausch + Lomb Biotrue® multi-purpose solution is specially formulated to work like the eyes, and is the only lens-care solution that matches the pH of healthy tears and has the same lubricant found naturally in the eye, providing up to 20 hours of moisture in every drop. * 1 In addition, it helps keep certain benefi cial tear proteins active in their natural state and removes protein build-up that can cause blurry vision and discomfort. e biocompatible features of Biotrue® multi- purpose solution make it an integral part of successful contact lens wear. In addition, many of my patients tend to appreciate that the solution is made from "bioinspired" materials designed to resemble the natural properties of the human eye. Both my students and patients alike are seeing fi rsthand that Bausch + Lomb Biotrue® multi-purpose solution helps keep contact lenses comfortable all day. Patients tell us they forget they're even wearing lenses, giving them the freedom to simply go about their daily activi- ties. Changing to a lens care system like Biotrue® multi-purpose solution, which is designed specifi cally to reduce contact lens dryness, allows many of my patients to wear their lenses continuously without needing to remove them earlier in the day than they would like. It's incumbent upon eye care professionals to dig beyond superfi cial questions—to look our patients straight in the eye and ask probing questions about their contact lens-wearing experience. If they say they're "doing fi ne," don't stop the conversation there. Find out what lens care solution they're using. If the product is falling short of expectations, they may benefi t from switching to an advanced lens care system that mimics the natural properties of the eyes. I know when I prescribe Bausch + Lomb Biotrue® multi-purpose solution and educate my patients on why this brand is a good fi t for them, I'm doing my part to prepare them for exceptional, long-term successful lens wear. Patients tell us they forget they're even them the freedom to simply go about their daily activities." ©2015 Bausch & Lomb Incorporated. US/BIO/15/0048 S P O N S O R E D BY B A U S C H + LO M B Reference: 1. A 20-hour wetting agent-release study was conducted in order to determine how much wetting agent(s) were le on contact lenses at periodic time intervals up to 20 hours. e study performed was very similar to a study conducted with renu fresh. Various lens care solutions were tested (Buff er, Clear Care, Opti-Free Replenish, Biotrue, renu fresh and renu sensitive). Procedure: Lenses were soaked in contact lens disinfecting solution (CLDS) or buff er for 8 hours then rinsed with buff er solution for 20 hours at a rate that approximates tear fi lm secretion. Rinse solution was collected at various intervals and the surface tension of the diluted samples were measured. A t-Test was performed on paired data to evaluate statistical diff erences in surface tensions among CLDS-soaked and HBSS-soaked lenses. e extended presence of wetting agents in the CLDS-soaked lens rinse solutions as indicated by a reduction of surface tension relative to HBSS-soaked lens surface tensions demonstrates that surfactants are retained and released by contact lenses. Statistical diff erences in the surface tensions between rinse solutions from the various lens/CLDS combinations also indicate diff erences in the length of time wetting agents are released among the lens/CLDS combinations. *Among multi-purpose solutions in the US.
